Be epic

21Oct10

I need to be honest. For those of you who may not know me well, I am pretty ambitious. And in the last few weeks it’s become abundantly clear I’ve been busy…probably acting upon those ambitions.

Last night I attended my first Sprout Up, a monthly event hosted by local (Toronto) company Sprouter and listened to both budding and experienced entrepreneurs talk about their businesses and share their learnings. Wow was that an eye-opener for me!

Of particular excitement was that Daniel Debow was one of the speakers. For those of you who don’t know Daniel, he’s a co-CEO of Rypple and prior to that was one of the founders and the VP of Corporate Development and Marketing for Workbrain.  Here are some gems he shared with the crowd:

  • Your passion may not be what you should be working on for your startup (It’s possible when your passion becomes your work, you’re no longer happy…in essence your passion is no more.)
  • Trust + Transparency + Autonomy = Performance (I couldn’t have said it better myself! Insight into the business and trusting your A game peeps is key!)
  • Don’t sell em, help em (It’s amazing if you just help out your customers and solve their issues, they become more loyal. Thus they buy more. It’s building trust with your customers that you will solve their issues and with that you’re creating brand loyalty.)

Listening to Daniel and the other entrepreneurs talk got me wishing I could start a startup of my own someday…except I’m missing one key ingredient – an idea! And not just any idea but THE idea.

For those of you running your own businesses, congrats! As scary as the risks you take each and every day to make it happen, you are doing epic shit. Just wanted to say I’m inspired by your creativity, problem-solving skills and ingenuity. Kudos.

Keep up the good work! 🙂
As one of my favourite sayings goes:

It’ll be ok at the end; and if it’s not ok, then it’s not the end.

Aside: This entire post was written all from the WordPress for iPhone app (with the exception of : centering the photo, adding a link to the Sprouter website, bulleting Daniel’s key points and the quote).

  1. What do you like that you think you can share with the world? That’s the question you need to answer to make your startup.

    • Agreed and I think that is the crux of any startup. What’s your idea? What is it that makes you different? Special.
